ENABLING CONFIDENT COUNCILLORS

April 2012
With May 3rd local elections fast approaching, local councils will be undergoing many changes. New councillors will be joining the ranks and experienced councillors will be embracing new roles. Whilst most councils have their own induction processes for new councillors, there are many skills the councillor needs in order to fulfil their potential and to serve their community as effectively as possible. At the heart of these skills is the ability to communicate with clarity and impact.
I have been working with local government for over 10 years and have consistently been amazed and delighted by the commitment of individuals who give up their time and energy to support their local community. I have also been astonished at the capacity of individuals to put themselves above the parapet in order to improve the environment in which they live. Naturally this may involve the need to speak in public for the first time in their lives – either in the council chamber, public forums, in residents meetings or within their own groups.
A lack of confidence can inhibit an individual’s ability to be their “best self”. It prevents people being able to put their ideas across with real clarity and it can undermine an individual’s ability to contribute as effectively as possible. The courses we run at RADA in Business give local councillors that confidence and that is why I am so passionate about working with individuals and groups within local authorities. I have run courses in Personal Presentation and Impact, Communication Skills for Meetings/Area Forums, Chairing skills, Communication Skills for Scrutiny and a host of bespoke courses for in house training all over the country. The one comment I consistently hear at the end of the day is a version of “Thank you. I now feel I have the tools and techniques I need to communicate with confidence and real focus”.
I believe that it is vital to give our councillors the opportunity to enable them to be as competent and successful as possible, and in my experience offering them communication skills training is the most direct way to achieve that end.

RADA'S TOP TIPS FOR SUCCESSFUL PRESENTATION PREPARATION
![]()
Whether you are speaking to an intimate group of colleagues, or delivering a key note speech to a large auditorium, we can all improve the way we communicate to our audience. Here are some top tips to ensure your engage your audience, and deliver your message with clarity and impact.
- Plan out what you are going to say – know your content well so you avoid having to look at your notes throughout.
- Practise your presentation – always aloud.
- Try doing a tongue twister to help with articulation, such as 'Please, Paul, pause for applause' and repeat 10 times.
- Take time for a warm up – your body, as well as your voice needs to be ready. Release any tension in your shoulders by bringing your shoulders up to your ears and drop them and repeat three times. Then alternate raising your right shoulder, then your left shoulder repeat six times.
- Keep calm, take a moment to gather your breath before you start to speak.

RADA PLAYS HOST TO THE LCCI NETWORKING EVENT
On January 17, RADA hosted the London Chamber of Commerce By Invitation Only networking reception in the Jerwood Vanbrugh Theatre. Sandie Miller, one of RADA Enterprises' senior business communications tutors spoke at the event about our training, coaching and event services.
The theatre took on a real transformation, with students props and scenery displayed, music from José Albela, RADA technical support, and canapes provided by our in-house caterers Harbour and Jones. Another wonderful event ran by our very own event management team.
RADA ACQUIRES THE LEASE OF THE DRILL HALL
From this January RADA has acquired the lease of its neighbouring venue, The Drill Hall on Chenies Street. The building will now be operating under the name of RADA Studios.
The acquisition of the lease will help to ensure the Academy’s financial self sufficiency in the future, providing further opportunity for income generation and sustaining us as a charity. We will be developing our venue hire operations as well as expanding our education and outreach work while continuing to support community based activities.
We will be using the building to expand our own activities as well as build on opportunities already developed by Central London Arts (trading as the Drill Hall) in performing arts, educational and community theatre activities.
Through the purchase of the Drill Hall, we seek to maintain our position as a world class drama academy offering training to those with talent irrespective of their financial position.
The Drill Hall is a local theatre and arts centre established in 1977. The building offers some of the most sought after rehearsal spaces and radio and television recording services in London. RADA will continue to offer these spaces under the name of RADA Studios.
For more informtion on how to hire rooms in the RADA Studios or across the academy please follow this link to RADA Venue Hire.
VIRTUAL COMMUNICATION
Webcam and Conference Call Training
A practical, one-day in-house course exploring how to communicate successfully during tele-conference meetings and conference calls.
Whether it is due to cutting costs, or more teams being spread across geographical locations, more and more meetings are conducted remotely. Clarity of communication is vital as technology such as webcam and conference calls have a greater role in our lives.
The training will allow you to adopt some simple techniques to help you communicate effectively and understand how your body language translates on to a screen, and how your vocal delivery carries along a telephone line.
