LOCAL AUTHORITY TRAINING

Modern politics require councillors and officials to master a range of communications skills to ensure that their voices are heard effectively, and we offer a range of training options to help.

We work with local authorities providing in-house training to help councillors improve their communication skills. All our public courses such as Personal Impact and Media Training are available as in-house courses. We have also developed three courses that address councillors’ particular objectives:

These are:

• Communication Skills for Scrutiny
• Communication Skills for Meetings
• Communication Skills for Public Meetings

Personal Impact

This personal impact course enables councillors to develop their personal presentation and their public speaking skills, to deliver a message with confidence and authenticity. The programme includes sessions on building vocal power and delivery, presence and impact, and understanding and engaging with your audience.

Communication Skills for Scrutiny

This course helps Overview and Scrutiny Councillors to improve their questioning and listening skills and confidence in the scrutiny setting. The sessions include discussion, theatre-based exercises and a simulated scrutiny exercise. This combination will help councillors understand the impact of their communication style, analyse the particular requirements of the scrutiny forum and, through practical work, show how to build rapport with other forum members and scrutiny contributors.

Communication Skills for Meetings

This course will enable councillors to get the most out of meetings, whether they are chairing or attending internal or public council meetings. We explain the importance of good management and clear facilitation in meetings, and of making confident and effective contributions.

Through a combination of practical work and discussion, we show councillors how to plan for a successful meeting, make an impact by presenting a proposal persuasively, get others to commit to a strategy, and deal with difficult attendees.

Communication Skills for Public Meetings

This course helps councillors communicate effectively and confidently when they chair or facilitate Local Area Forums & Community Councils. Participants take part in exercises and discussions to develop their own personal impact, understand how to maintain the focus or objective of a meeting, handle questions and manage a challenging public forum.

Costs

The cost for an In-House Local Authority Training Course is from £2,500 per day plus VAT for one tutor. Tutor/venue expenses where applicable are additional.
