Modern politics requires councillors and officers to master a range of skills to ensure that that they communicate effectively, with focus, clarity and conviction.

Personal Impact

Personal impact training enables councillors to develop their personal presentation and their public speaking skills, to ensure they deliver a message with confidence and clarity.
The training includes sessions on building vocal power and range, body language and presence, engaging an audience and delivering key messages.

Communication Skills for Scrutiny

This training enables Councillors to improve their questioning and listening skills and build their confidence for scrutiny meetings. The sessions include discussion, theatre-based exercises and simulated scrutiny exercises. Councillors will understand the impact of their communication style and the communication requirements of the scrutiny forum.
Through practical work, councillors will practise how question, listen, build rapport and communicate with confidence.

Communication Skills for Meetings

This training will enable councillors to get the most out of meetings, whether they are chairing or attending. It will help councillors for internal meetings, full council meetings or public meetings/local area forums/ community meetings. During the sessions councillors will learn the importance of good management and clear chairing or facilitation in meetings, making confident and effective contributions, and influencing others.
Through a combination of practical work and discussion, we show councillors how to successfully chair a meeting, make an impact by being persuasive and building rapport with others, including difficult attendees.

Costs

The cost of Local Authority training ranges from £975 to £2,500 + VAT per tutor per session. Tutor Expenses (travel, accommodation and subsistence) / Venue & catering expenses where applicable are all additional.
