THE TRIALS OF GALILEO

The Trials of Galileo is a one-man play celebrating the 400th anniversary of Galileo’s discoveries and exploring the tensions between science and religion through one man’s struggle for intellectual and spiritual salvation.

About the Play

"We find 'proof' a very unnatural word to use in this context, Galileo. 'Proof' denies faith, and without faith we are nothing. The universe is a divine miracle, not a clockwork toy!"

So says the Pope, and in that statement is contained Galileo's tragedy: that he failed to understand his differences with the church were never a question of logic, of reason, and of scientific proof. They were a question of politics. This is an argument that continues to this day. The Pope believed then, as many do now, that faith in God is an end in itself, and something infinitely too precious to be discounted by some new scientific 'fact' of today, which could - in any case - be very well disproved tomorrow.

In what he saw, Galileo was a genius. In what he didn't see, he was an untutored child, and when he finally came to understand, it was too late. In October 1992, Pope John Paul II declared the church officials had been wrong to condemn Galileo, exactly 350 years after his death.

Reviews

“This is drama that makes you think but also laugh and cry. Anyone who loves theatre should see this performance." Peter Holland, McMeel Family Chair in Shakespeare Studies, Notre Dame, Former Director of The Shakespeare Institute at Stratford-Upon-Avon

“Passionate, intelligent, hilarious, chilling—in Tim Hardy’s phenomenal performance, the knife-fight between science and religion does not take place between men, but INSIDE one.” Gary Taylor, George Matthew Edgar Professor of English, Florida State University, General Editor of the Oxford Shakespeare’s Complete Works

“It is Hardy’s performance, through a spectrum of mood changes, that makes the evening so special. It is an entrancing and moving character study, showing that great acting can as easily happen in small spaces as in the grandest theatres.” Dr. Alastair Niven, OBE, Principal, Cumberland Lodge, The Great Park, Windsor

“I just wanted to thank you…for bringing Tim Hardy to our school last night for his fabulous performance of Galileo. It was truly magnificent. I and others on our staff have gotten several emails today raving about the performance and the discussion that followed, and they were all spot-on. It was a great event that brilliantly wove literary, historical, religious, and legal themes together—just the kind of things we should do at a university.” Gary R. Roberts, Dean & Gerald L. Bepko Prof. of Law, Indiana University School of Law—Indianapolis
