Mike Haines

Mike is a former head of media relations for Unilever PLC, the international blue-chip consumer goods company. Throughout his career, he has been focused on the media. He trained as a journalist and initially worked for a number of years as a general reporter and feature writer on various London and Home Counties based newspapers.

He later moved into public relations to specialise in developing news stories and features in support of client PR initiatives (including Calor Gas, Robertson Foods, Xpelair) and sports sponsorship programmes (including Esso, Ford Motors, Kraft Foods). There followed a period as group press and publications officer for the Coral Leisure Group (off-course betting, hotels, casinos and holiday locations) before transferring to Unilever, in the early 80s, to become a member of the corporate and financial press team.

Mike was subsequently appointed head of media relations for Unilever PLC and was responsible for the group’s interface with the national and international business media. He developed programmes profiling key personnel and the corporation and its subsidiaries; provided media support for major mergers and acquisitions projects, financial results reporting, and issues management. Another key area of responsibility was developing and running media training programmes for senior management around the world.

Since leaving Unilever in 2004, Mike has concentrated on media training. He now works as an independent consultant and adviser as well as offering clients a media awareness programme, tailored to their specific needs and designed to make them better prepared to meet the demands of print and broadcast media.
