“Our Personal Impact Programme with RADA’s business training division started at the beginning of this year and focused on work with Area Business Managers. Sixty people have attended so far, and another course takes place this month.

“We took up the programme because we are heavily involved in community engagement work. Our managers talk to schools, groups affected by crime, residents associations and many other community groups.

“As we went through programme, we also found it really useful for helping talk with internal staff, especially groups of lawyers who could sometimes be quite adversarial. One manager who took part admitted that they felt very suspicious being told to take off their shoes and socks and lay down on the floor at one point, as part of a relaxation exercise, but they agreed afterwards that it was well worth it.

“Many participants have told me they were nervous beforehand, but the exercises and the structure of the programme was great, and they were able to use what they learned almost immediately. One also claimed she’d found the training very useful outside work, especially when it came to making a speech at her own wedding!

“The feedback we received stated that it was one of the best programmes we’d ever run. Even one of the previously cynical people said it was the best day he’d ever spent in training. As feedback was so good, our people in Lancashire requested we put on courses for their lawyers and managers, and the programme has now widened to include others within the CPS.”

Holly Wheeler, Learning and Development Manager, Leadership Centre for Local Government, put 100 people through a specially devised Leeds Castle leadership programme in which RADA Enterprises delivered a key module in personal impact.

“Two and a half years ago, we began looking for something very practical to tailor and support people with – we wanted experts with which we could work and design something together. RADA Enterprises had a good reputation and their tutors were great to work with - all coped very well with a variety of abilities and being able to work to our specific briefs.

“Those involved included elected politicians and Chief Executives. We tried to design sessions which would maximise expertise in using physical awareness and speaking, to support greater presence in terms of leadership impact.

“I did the programme myself and found it very helpful. I was with my boss which was quite tough as I find it hard to speak in front of people I know. One exercise had us standing in front of a group not saying anything. I hated it the first time round – I was full of tension – but the second time round I felt much more comfortable and able to connect.

“Quite often, it is a very emotional journey. Working together in small groups enables people to talk about difficult things and unlock physical tensions. You realise that when you stop, your brain often doesn’t. Giving your thinking head a rest is quite a skill to learn.”
